It surprises me when I discover new business owners who do not have an attorney. If you are one of them and haven’t had needed one yet, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t line one up now. It’s best to find a lawyer when you’re not under pressure. And every business will need legal counsel from time to time.
Jessica Eaves Matthews of StartupNation advises you to find a lawyer through someone you know and trust — your CPA, insurance agent or banker, for instance. Don’t settle for just one recommendation. Gather several and meet with each one. Many attorneys will grant you an initial exploratory meeting without a fee.
Have a list of questions, and ask each of them the same ones. You will get a good sense of which one has the best experience for your needs. Ask about billing rates and assess whose personality will work well with you.
Matthews says, “Word of mouth and personal referrals are the best way to find a lawyer,” and I agree.
