“The Internet could have been the death knell for a company like J&R Electronics.
In its three decades in one location in downtown Manhattan, J&R had managed to build a strong reputation around having knowledgeable sales staff, a broad selection and low prices. On the Web, however, it had to start almost from scratch, building a reputation with a new set of customers as it tried to deal with the logistics of selling online.”
– The Internet is a different beast. There are different factors that effect growth and access to customers then there are in the ‘real’ world. J&R has done a good job of evaluating and responding to the differences but many others have not and they are suffering in the ‘real’ world for this failure. Making a change in your business without evaluating the consequences beforehand is a BAD idea. -ed.
