From time to time I mention books about emotional intelligence for those of you who want to learn more.
So for those of you who want to learn more without reading anything too terribly dense, there is an easy guide: Emotional Intelligence for Dummies. The oxymoronic title cracks me up, of course. But the book itself isn’t bad. In true Dummy fashion, it covers a lot of ground — including the science behind emotional intelligence, dealing with difficult people, and parenting in an emotionally intelligent way — in a super-breezy style. And I got a kick out of the two final chapters — one on helping difficult people become more emotionally intelligent (big challenge!) and one on helping the whole world become more emotionally intelligent (an even bigger, big challenge).
I’d recommend picking it up this summer if you’re looking for an easy introduction to the topic — or if you’re looking for something inspirational to give to the proverbial “difficult person” in your life.
