The company president sent an email to several director level managers. He shared his thoughts about an upcoming organization change and asked for ideas and feedback. Everyone responded as expected. "Looks great."?? "I agree!"?? "Add X, but otherwise it looks fine."?? Everyone, that is, except Anne. She almost responded in kind but then thought about it:
What do I really think?
What could I say that would make a difference?
It took just a minute and her response was candid, constructive, direct, and strong. It made all the difference in the world. Anne´s email to the president changed the course of the organization for the better. The president responded with appreciation and added respect for Anne´s contribution.
This is a real situation, but it doesn´t happen enough! As leaders we have the opportunity to make a difference by saying or doing THE THING that needs to be said or done.
How about you? You´re brilliant! I bet you have several opinions, perspectives, and ideas that could make a difference if shared with the right people.
We all have special talents and are leaders for a reason. The right question, a new idea, or a well articulated concern can change business and is worth thousands and sometimes millions of dollars.
It´s quite a rush to know that something you did – in just a moment – will benefit the organization in a big way.
