In a lot of home based businesses, you are sometimes told to “do as I do”. This is particularly true in Network Marketing home businesses where you have a sponsor or upline telling you step-by-step how to run your business. And some people who join home based business opportunities want a turn key solution or want to be told exactly what to do. This is a mentality of duplication.
Some degree of coaching from an upline is necessary and productive as long as it stays in the context of training and enabling. Relying too much on a set of steps spoon fed to you is relying too much on duplication. This sort of ‘duplication mentality’ is the exact reason why Network Marketing is known for a high failure rate.
There are situations where duplication works very well. Take the franchise fast food industry for example. People go to McDonalds expecting things to be exactly as it was at their trip to McDonalds on the other side of town. There they don’t want surprises. Well maybe they do, but they won’t get any there.
Differentiation mentality, not is duplication mentality the key to success in a home based business. In order to rise up and be successful in a home based business, you must do something that differentiates you from the crowd. Something that makes people want to do business with you, not your sea of competitors. Differentiation is particularly important during these difficult economic times. You’ve probably heard “differentiate or die” before and nothing could be more true or more relevant to home based business success.
