T.O. Whenham has this great blog post about Training Yourself to Work at Home. Among other things in his post, he says he will ‘get dressed as if I was going to work’. He says that helps him get in the right mindset for work at home.
One of the issues that some home-based business people face is taking themselves seriously as a business. I think it may be difficult to take your business seriously if you work in your robe or pajamas. Everyone is a bit different, but I know that I perform at a higher level when I put on something nice and I agree with T.O., that it helps to put me in the right mindset. I’m not talking suit and tie (although I have heard of people donning formal business attire at home), but just a nice shirt, slacks, and, yes even some shoes.
Another aspect of dressing for work at home is that it can help send the right message to your household members. Do you have a difficult time relating the fact that you need time to work to other family or household members? Dressing for work will help drive the message home that you really are a home-based business and you need to work in your home office free from distractions.
What about you? Do you dress for work at home?
