One of the things I remember most about teaching school was the constant snacking that we did in the breakroom. Seemed everyday someone was bringing in doughnuts, cakes, chips, salsa, homemade delicacies that just tasted so good after a particularly on those days when the students were so full of themselves I thought they may combust.
Seems that some companies are now taking the obesity epidemic in America a little more seriously and banning the junk from the breakroom.
When you think about it, these companies do have a stake in how their employees snack, especially if they are putting out money in insurance policies and finding that employees are getting sick because of their overeating or poor eating habits.
But will this work? Some employees complained when these changes were made. I can tell you this much, if I were still teaching in a school in which this happened there could be a strike!
On the other hand, I totally agree with the idea behind this. I don’t think the occasional slice of cake is bad, but I know when I was a teacher we had an ongoing slew of sweets and sugar. Dieters on the faculty were in a bad bind, and sometimes skipped the teacher’s breakroom altogether simply to avoid tempation!
What are your thoughts? Doughnuts or fresh fruit? Should the company have a say in what we snack on in the breakroom?
