You’ve probably heard about the e-coli outbreak in Florida (28+ at last count) from earlier this year that was tracked to one petting zoo. It’s a sad situation. But what you haven’t heard is what’s happening to all of the small businesses in the petting zoo industry across the state. They are suffering big time. One scare and every single company in that industry is affected.
You may also have heard that the major airlines have decided to stop supplying pillows to their passengers. I’m sure glad I’m not a pillow supplier. [smile]
So what do either of these situations have to do with your business? They’re a quick reminder that you shouldn’t put all your eggs in one basket. Diversify. Make sure you serve more than one industry or have more than one product or service. That way, if one of the sectors you service has a major downturn, it won’t put you out of business.
What do you think? Is there an industry – or business segment – that’s “bullet proof?” I’d love to hear from you. Leave me a comment below.
