We’re constantly trying to design new products and services for inventors at InventRight. But sometimes, we really just don’t know what’s going to help them the most. I’ve always advocated that the best way to get information is right from the source – your audience. And the most common way to do that might be through a survey. But people don’t always answer surveys honestly (or at all), and we might not even ask the right questions. So recently I’ve begun to do my own market research and I’ve discovered a new strategy that can be applied to all industries.
There are many forums where inventors produce threads on a variety of topics. I’ve learned a great deal by reading through them, like what their worries are, what they feel they need or are lacking, where they’re stuck, and what they’re looking for. It isn’t enough to simply glance through though. But an in-depth reading of the past month’s thread really reveals a lot. The details are important – reading through the unfiltered thoughts of your customers will really help you create a new business or product. This is a new strategy for me. Reading people’s comments has really painted a different picture of the market. I’ve always said that knowing your customer is key – use all the forums on the Internet to do so!
