Maybe I am just slow. Maybe I am just an old recovering ex-yuppie, holding on to the useless business fads and cultural remnants of the time (that be the 90s).
Perhaps you have already figured this out.
Multi-tasking is a dumb, stressful, and a great way to suboptimize. I am not alone in this thinking. I have been talking to several interesting experts for a project and many of them repeated the same thing – the supposed benefits of multi-tasking are bunk!
I am straddling several large projects right now. All of them important and all of them clamoring for my attention. I decided to do a test and take longer chucks of time to focus on each instead of doing the concurrent multi-tasking thing. Over the last 4 days, I assigned entire days to focus on a project. Each day a different focus. When my mind started to wander, I shut my thoughts down and filed them away until it was their time. I got so much done!!!!!
I feel like an idiot. For months (years?) I have been hearing lots of smart folks say multi-tasking is counter-productive. But did I listen to them? Nooooooooo. I have learned my lesson and am a reformed chunker.
We all have lots of tasks, lots of projects, lots of diversions. But we can all chunk up our work so that we can offer important projects the time, focus, and brainpower they deserve.
Are you still hanging on to multi-tasking? Liberate yourself today.
Here’s a funny mental picture…Imagine Joey Tribiani saying, "how you doin’?" in his usual way, and the response being, "chunky!"
P.S. Managers – don’t become a multi-tasker generator. Help your team members focus or they will never do their best work. I bet many of them would just like to say, "stop already!"
