Just outside of Oxford, the environmental group, Low Impact Living Initiative is giving courses in turning used vegetable oil into bio-fuels. Having had more then 1000 people walk into the classroom, this is a course for anyone who wants to take it, scientist or layman.
The recycling of restaurant oil has apparently not taken off in Britain yet, so the course graduates won’t have the problems that they’re having in San Francisco or in Houston. However, the initial start up costs to creating your own biofuel is between 1000 and 2000 pounds, so it will take a year to offset that with fuel savings.
Interest is apparently high though, with the company who sells the reprocessing equipment, Greenfuels, estimating sales haven risen from $100,000 to $2 million in the past 4 years.
