When choosing food for that business function or organizational lunch, it is worth considering organic food. Or if you are in catering or crops, it may be worth offering an organic stream.
Aside from the current debate regarding any nutritional benefits, it’s importance lies in the following:
– no pesticides and herbicides are used thus, it is better for the environment while being grown
– carbon emissions on organic farms are half what they are on conventional farms due to the absence of chemical fertilizers, which require a large amount of energy to produce and distribute to, and on, the conventional farm
– the use of chemical fertilizers also results in higher emission of nitrous oxide, a greenhouse gas approximately 300 times more potent than carbon dioxide
– organic farms are more labour intensive, meaning less fuel-guzzling, emitting machinery is used
With current agriculture responsible for one-third of the world’s greenhouse emissions, the kind of food you choose to grow, provide or buy for your clients and staff is very important.
