Have you ever been to a blog or forum, tried to make a comment, but were presented with an unreadable ‘Verification Mask’?
I’m not sure what they’re actually called but they are those boxes with convoluted looking letters perhaps mixed with some numbers. You are supposed to read them and type them in to prove that you’re an actual human reader.
They are deliberately stretched and distorted so that automated readers can’t read them. Unfortunately, some humans (including yours truly) often have a difficult time with them. Sometimes they’re so distorted that you practically have to guess what they are.
This morning I tried and tried to ‘guess’ at a certain WordPress blog with one of those masks – and failed. I know that these masks are a necessary evil, but please, oh please blog design folks — don’t go overboard with the verification masks.
