Several months ago I wrote an article about cold calling. It has been, hands down, the most popular article on my blog. A search on Google returns 588,000 hits. A search in Amazon reveals 77 books with the phrase “cold call” or “cold calling” in the title.
From experience I know a lot of local salespeople still cold call in person and on the phone. I see them in my community. I get their calls. My customers and prospects tell me stories about all the cold calls they get.
And yet when I talk to both salespeople and their customers (or their would-be customers) what I mostly hear is that “cold calling does not work anymore”. I hear a lot of reasons why:
People are busy, they don’t like being pestered, it’s rude, it’s too hard on my esteem, I can’t take the rejection, etc.
So, which is it? Does it work or not? Is it a valid prospecting method anymore? Is it okay for some businesses and not others?
I will be writing more about this topic. But to get started, I’d like to hear from you. What is your opinion about cold calling, good, bad or otherwise?
