A large ad caught my eye as I turned the pages of the magazine section of my Sunday newspaper. The copy read, “Life takes many twists and turns…the one thing you can count on is your paycheck.” The ad promoted “National Payroll Week,
No, I don’t think jobs and paychecks should be guaranteed to all Americans. I do believe that pay, in the form of paychecks or independent earnings is the reward for work. Paychecks are not something to be taken for granted, they have to be earned.
National Payroll Week 2008 has a dedicated web site where you can take a survey, buy merchandise, send an e-card to, “anyone who loves their paycheck” and link to information about deductions and savings. The survey covers an interesting mix of questions with topics ranging from annual earnings of US Congress members to Flexible Spending Accounts. The information about savings and deductions is clearly the most useful.
The payroll professionals who work for my clients are important links for the HR function. Accurate recordkeeping, the ability to provide information and correct deductions are essential administrative tasks. They certainly deserve thanks and praise when it’s due even thought they don’t issue a paycheck to me.
Thank you to all of the payroll professionals that keep the function humming and issue paychecks. Thank you to everyone with accounts payable responsibilities who issue checks to independent contractors.
