You’ve probably heard it said: Follow your passion to success. Does that work in business? More specifically, does that work in a home based business? Yes, it can work. Following something you’re passionate about is a tried and true way to start a home based business. Another option might be to start your home business based on an area you are trained in (which may or may not align with your passion). Still another option would be to start a home based business in a market you have no knowledge of or no existing interest in. I think the latter is the most risky approach of all and while I’ve seen it work, it requires continued discipline. It’s hard to be disciplined in something you’re not really interested in, by the way.
If you’re passionate about something and want to develop a home based business around it, then you’ll need to find a market in there somewhere. For example, a colleague of mine is passionate about Apple Macintosh computers. That doesn’t mean she sells them on eBay (I don’t even know if that’s possible) but it does mean she is building a business around it. How? She’s formed a consulting business where she advises local businesses on how to integrate Apple computers into their predominately PC-based networks. She’s taken advantage of the corporate world’s general dissatisfaction with Microsoft’s Vista operating system and has found a way to leverage her business on that angle.
No matter what your passion, if you can develop a business around some angle of it, it’s more likely to fuel your success. It’s more likely to keep you going over the long haul – through the lean times as well as good times. So what’s your passion?
