More and more businesses are outsourcing their phone support staff in order to cut costs. They don’t always outsource offshore to places like India. Often large companies and even smaller businesses outsource this service to domestic home based agents, known as “call center agents”.
In this arrangement, the home based agent becomes the voice support for the call center company. The company itself may serve multiple clients and the agent may be required to answer questions, do selling and up selling, log problems, take orders or any other functions that a company might delegate to a call center.
I’ve discussed the distinction between work from home arrangements and home-based businesses before: they’re not the same thing. A work from home arrangement is just that – a job that you perform from your home. A home-based business is a business that your build, grow, nurture, and make sacrifices for (from home). In most cases, two different entirely different things for two different mindsets.
While I don’t consider Call Center Agents as a home-based business, they are a valid ‘work from home’ arrangement. They’re great for people who need an income and want to do the work from their home but perhaps are not ready to build their own business.
