This is a true story. I was talking with one of my alliance partners (who shall go nameless). She has been in business for a few years now, and told me that she just made her FIRST cold call the day I spoke with her. Wow!
I immediately told her this was “blog material”. For example, can anyone remember when they made their first cold call? For me it was sometime in the very early ’80s.
The great news was that she reached the person she was trying to connect with – in the first contact. She had a conversation, and is sending follow up materials. No lives were lost, no one was offended – she did make a valuable connection – which goes against what people say about why you should “never” cold call.
Cold Calling DOES work. It is slow, ineffective usually, but it does work. Unless you receive 100% of your business through referral, you need to contact people you don’t know somehow. I’ll be talking more about WARM calling in an upcoming post.
For now, know that it won’t kill you to pick up the phone and call someone you don’t know. Try it out! You may be most pleasantly surprised at your success.
