I had a conversation with Keith Ferrazzi (author of Never Eat Alone) today and I just loved the way he said that all business relationships are personal. Connection means being intimate. Does this word make you queasy (I’m sure a few HR people are cringing)? Intimate, intimate, intimate. Ooey, gooey, personal relationships. Real relationships are intimate.
Have you read the book? You should, it is deeper and more compelling than you might expect.
With this theme in mind, I have written a poem about business intimacy. I have not offered a poem for a while, so it is way overdue! Let me know if you like it. It is a bit ooey gooey.
When I look into your soul, I see more than just file folders
File folders filled with facts, lists, boxes, project deadlines
I see the full range of color, music, and texture that is uniquely yours
Yours wrapped up in story, conflict, curiosity, and messiness
Trepidation reveals your sonata beyond the file folders on the surface
The surface is hollow but it is also where I once felt safe and dry
Inside, you show me a winding road of mystery and your energy coaxes
Coaxes my psyche to venture dangerously deep into you
We cannot be truly connected and talk of budgets and business blabbering
Blabbering hackneyed conversations largely irrelevant leave me wanting
Yearning to know your essence and understand what lights your fire
Your fire supplies fuel for our enterprising intimacy
