October 16th is Boss’s Day in the United States. As if you could’ve forgotten. Man, where has the year gone… Anyway, 800CEOREAD has teamed up with Lisa Haneberg to offer an e-book for the boss in your life. I’ve read it and I dig it. It’s a fun read–reads a lot like an extended blog post on management and leadership. It’s called 9 Lives of Leadership and in 83 pages, Lisa cruises through nine recent books, doing mini-reviews and interviews with the authors. It’s a lot of fun to read and pretty insightful to boot.
The end of the e-book wraps up with two lists compiled from the reviewed authors. One list is of "undervalued" managerial skills and the other, predictably, is "overvalued" managerial skills. Both lists, though short, were great for getting me thinking about the management skills I’ve developed and the ones that I’ve never even considered. These lists alone ought to be fodder for a book.
Overall, it’d be a great little gift for the boss or bosses at work. Probably ought to be a little careful, though, when giving the boss a gift. I’m guessing that some bosses would rather get a new coffee mug than a brief treatise on how to be a better manager and leader (though I’d argue that maybe those are the folks who need to read it the most).
