I laughed at myself today as I was talking with my 3½ year old son about how to deal with our dog. Since the new baby arrived at our house, the dog has been feeling a little neglected, I think, and has been acting out a bit. The acting out includes a little bit of growling and nipping when kid-play gets a little too close to him. Of course, this freaks the boy out. So a little coaching was in order.
I told him that he needs to be the boss of the dog. He still has to give the dog lots of love and attention, but he also needs to remember that the dog needs some of his own space, too.
I think the advice was just what Truman needed to get over his apprehension around the dog. Now he’s sure to stop playing and go love on the dog a bit and he’s careful about what kind of playing he does around the dog. Several times a day, I hear Tru tell me, "Dad, I just gave Frodo some lovin’."
This is what management has come to during parental leave. 🙂
