The high cost of doing business is nibbling away at every restaurateur’s budget. And, as frustration mounts amongst owners within the industry, the number of restaurateurs ready to throw in the towel seems to be multiplying more rapidly than the rabbits paired with the Fusilli in Babbo’s kitchen.
The mandated costs include a minimum wage that tops the state minimum of $8.00 by an additional $1.14 an hour. Plus, to add insult to injury, a mandatory health care contribution plan that requires owners with more than 20 employees to pay up to $1.60 per hour, per employee, towards worker health care took effect in January. To make sure we get all the clichés in this column, let’s rub a bit of salt into the wounds – a measure was passed by the voters- put on the ballot by the geniuses who sit on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors- mandating companies provide an hour of paid sick time for every week an employee works.

Or, don’t they care? Are they trading businesses for votes? If that be the case the voters should consider the fact that menu costs are rising because of the politicians, not the owners or the vendors.
Supervisor Tom Ammiano- a beauty of a politician- championed The City’s universal health care ordinance along with The Mayor. According to the San Francisco Examiner, Andiammo has tried to work with the restaurant industry to address concerns. The Supe claimed that the restaurant owners were having a two-year-old tantrum, embarrassing themselves with their self-importance and sense of entitlement and privilege. Big words for a little man, but that’s the political slap down previously referred to. Andiamo, a champion of the homeless, sick and misbegotten has obviously little respect for those in the industry who contribute approximately $27 million sales tax dollars a year to The City.
Yes, it may be time for the restaurant owners to stage a protest and close for the day. And, when they reopen, they should all have an addition to their menu… a Bologna Sandwich, named after the politicians who have driven operating costs through the roof, menu prices to the stars and the enjoyment of operating a restaurant, out the window.
