It’s always frightening to receive a call in the middle of the night. You immediately think that something terrible has happened, perhaps a family memeber has been taken to the hospital…or worse.
I received such a call a few weeks ago. On the other end of the line was a voice I did not recognize but who said my name. Being still mostly asleep I mumbled something incoherent, told the person they must have a wrong number, then hung up the phone.
As I found out later it wasn’t someone reporting disaster or calamity, but a representative with a company in Singapore that hosts leadership training conference, MaitreAllianz. The caller, Alethea Liow, had emailed me earlier to say she would be calling regarding a corporate blogging conference they were planning. I never received the email unfortunately, and thus was not expecting the call.
Turns out, Alethea had also contacted a close friend of mine, Susannah Gardner, the author of Buzz Marketing with Blogs For Dummies (a book on which I had the privilege of serving as technical editor). Susie apprised me of the situation and another call was arranged at a more reasonable hour.
To make a long story longer Alethea was calling to invite me to be a co-presenter along with Susie at the first-ever business blog conference to be held in Asia!
They have branded the conference BLOGasia, and it will be held less than two months from now, September 21-22.
The amazing thing about this (Well, there are several amazing things, not the least of which is they asked me to help lead it.)is that Alethea did not realize Susie and I not only knew one another, but had actually worked together on a project and had even discussed the possibility of turning the book into a business blog seminar! Not only that, we were the only two she contacted.
An interesting set of coincidences perhaps, but then again, I’m not one who believes in coincidence. I think something wonderful, even ground-breaking, is happening and I am blessed and humbled to take part.
Susie and I feel this is of no small significance as we are being given the opportunity to extend business/corporate blogging into an entire continent. MaitreAllianz hopes to have somewhere around 150 participants, many of whom will come from various parts of east Asia.
Like many of my cohorts, I am a business “blogvangelist,” and this is somewhat of a “mission trip.” Susie and I get to be blog missionaries! Heh.
