They’re back. Fans of Marshall Field’s, that is. On Sept. 9, the second anniversary of the day Chicago’s flagship Marshall Field’s store on State Street becamse (Yikes!) Macy’s, Field’s Fans are having a lunchtime rally under the “Great Clock at State and Washington streets,” as Chicagoans say.
Organizers are asking participants to “wear your Marshall Field’s best” or something dark green, to bring signs and placards, to carry a Marshall Field’s shopping bag or a city of Chicago flag. They’re asking protesters to be peaceful and dignified and to avoid obstructing doors.
In short, they haven’t given up yet. And, who knows, they may prevail. Coming from one shopper (me) who still mourns the loss of Atlanta’s homegrown Rich’s store and who believes that national chains cannot ever replace homegrown stores, I hope they do.
