Ever hear of “on-line hunting?” Here’s how it works. Someone sets up a high powered rifle on a tripod in the woods, and then they mount a web-cam that looks through the scope on the rifle. They connect the whole thing to a website and sell slots of time to on-line “hunters.” As a customer, you purchase a slot of time and you log into the website and stare through the scope until you see a deer, a moose, or perhaps one of Dick Chaney’s assistants walk into the line of fire, then you click the mouse…. BOOM!
As a hunter, I know there’s a lot to consider before you take the shot. “What’s downhill from there? Are there other hunters in the area? Are there boulders or other things for bullets to ricochet off of?” My question is… wasn’t there anyone who really thought this through? I mean, this can’t be a good idea. After all, they’ve finally made it illegal almost everywhere but
I’m digressing again. The point I’m trying to make is this, sometimes a good idea turns into a bad one after you think it through. Take the Hertz #1 Club Gold Member rental car situation for example. It sure sounds convenient to be able to walk right up to your car and drive away doesn’t it? You don’t have to stop at the counter, you don’t have to talk to a foreign national in a strange language to articulate that you want a “C-A-R,” you don’t have to give your license to the acne faced teenager who just learned how to run the rental terminal the day before, nope; you walk to the board, find your name and drive away.
Let me ask you this, honestly, what cars do you suppose Hertz keeps in waiting for that program? Answer? The ones nobody else wanted, of course! Ever travel to
So here’s what you do. You call FIRST! “Hello, I’m a Hertz Gold Club member and I have a reservation for next week. I’ve been looking at the weather and I’ve decided I really need a front wheel drive or, better yet, a 4wd vehicle to make it through the roads safely.” They honor your phone request 100% of the time. Even better; I have a whole list of their cars that I enjoy, and a list that I refuse to drive (too short, too slow, way too ridiculous, etc) and they’re all listed in my profile and they usually honor it, I have to give them credit.
So, think it through! Headed to
