Blogs are becoming increasingly more complex under the hood and WordPress blogs are no exception. If you spend a lot of time writing in your WordPress blog, you should see that writing as an investment. As with any investment, you should protect it. One way you can protect your WordPress blog is by backing it up. After all, after you spend all that time writing content, who wants to lose it?
Things can happen on the web hosting side that can lose blog data. Although most web host companies have aggressive backup strategies, there are still things that can go wrong (e.g. web host gets shut down abruptly and unexpectedly).
I have stated in previous blog posts that you can backup your WordPress blog data by using the built in “export” feature. This does work but one of the disadvantages of using the export feature is that it doesn’t get everything. It does not get plug-ins, themes, or widget information for example.
Here is a handy WordPress plug-in called WordPress DB Backup. And here is a page that has a nice easy to understand tutorial on using the plug-in. It assumes you have some knowledge of using WordPress plug-ins.
If you have a home based business blog using WordPress, be sure to protect your investment by backing it up!
