Abigail Van Buren (aka Dear Abby) defined Maturity as:
Maturity is: The ability to stick with a job until it’s finished; The ability to do a job without being supervised; The ability to carry money without spending it; and The ability to bear an injustice without wanting to get even”. (Source)
I love this quote and find it to be very applicable to qualities needed in running a business. All four of those abilities are required if you want to become a success in a home based business.
You must stick with the business – Too many people start a home based business and then bail out after just a few months because it’s not yet working out for them. You need to stick with it and prepare to commit to it for the long run.
You must be able to work without supervision – This sounds easy but in reality it will require a great deal of discipline. It’s far more difficult to work without supervision in a home environment than it is in an office environment. This is because of the wide variety of potential distractions sitting all around you.
You must manage your money wisely – “The ability to carry money without spending it” implies that you should use your money wisely. For example, if your home business makes a better than expected profit one month, use that profit wisely. Don’t use it as an excuse to spend money for the sake of spending money.
Ignore insults and pettiness – You will find that many people won’t agree with you or like what you are selling. This might result in occasional insults thrown your way. Don’t be tempted to getting into a verbal dual in that schoolyard fashion. Move on to the next person or the next task and forget about it.
So this leads to the question: are you mature enough for a Home Based Business?
