What was the last idea or project you pitched to your company?
I know that sometimes it´s not our fault and it´s the culture that squelches ideas.
I know that if people are negatively reinforced for sharing their ideas and concerns they will stop offering them.
I know that some people grew up in a culture/context that did not encourage proactive communication.
I know many of us were indoctrinated in companies that communicated – "don´t rock the boat" and "follow the chain of command."
I know these things but I still go crazy when I talk to someone and find out that they had ideas that could have prevented a problem or could have improved things but said nothing.
This is just me, but I think that our basic job responsibility, no matter what our level or functional area, is to help the company perform better.
So what about you and me? When was the last time we contributed an idea, suggestion, proposal, or constructively voiced an important concern? And for those of you who are entrepreneurs, when was the last time you contributed ideas or concerns to your clients (something extra, not time billed)?
We are great business people when we help business be great.
I am buoyed by several of the projects that the participants in my 2 Weeks 2 a Breakthrough pilot program are taking on. Several people have chosen to take these two weeks to focus on helping their organizations get better. That´s cool and shows passion and dedication by which we can all be inspired.
