Come on, I know many of you have a deviant side…. I remember when I worked at Amazon, they had a recruiting campaign that said something like, "we are looking for deviants and freaks.."
I like this post about the value of deviants from the Evolving Ideas blog. Interesting quote:
And it would serve us well to remember that deviance itself is a contextual phenomenon-a child who is performing brilliantly in school might be lauded at home but marginalized at school as a "bookworm´ or teacher´s favorite.
I am sure we would all be perceived as deviants in some context (some of us more than others!). The $64,000 question is:
Are we utilizing our deviants (or the deviance within ourselves)?
How do you embrace and invite deviance into your business conversations? Ask for a little deviance by requesting ideas, concerns, and worries that go against standards and norms. What if we threw the rule book out – what would we do? If the room were filled with our naysayers, what ideas would they advocate? What’s the craziest idea that just might work?
