Put this in the “stuff that makes you go ‘huh?’ file”. I am at a internet conference in San Francisco. It’s being hosted at the Saint Regis, a lovely new hotel where the rooms go for more than $500 per night. I needed to make a phone call to a radio reporter and my cell phone was not going to cut it. I needed a land line.
No problem, I’d just grab a pay phone. Good luck!! I was informed that this elegant new hostelry did not have a single pay phone on the premises. They suggested that I walk down to the W Hotel on the corner.
The W which is all about being cool. They did have a cell phone in the lobby–but had placed it under a speaker pounding out 80’s pop. Call me overly sensitive but I find it hard to have a serious business conversation when it sounds like you are in a dance club at three in the afternoon. I finally found a quieter phone in the meeting area.
The experience reminded me how dependent I’ve become on my cell phone but also how limited it can be sometimes.
