Found a really interesting little tidbit from McAfee this morning. In a review of Oxford’s “ICT Towards low carbon emission” conference, Patrick Comiotto puts forth the idea that those vicious pieces of malware aren’t just bad for computer systems, but are also harmful for the environment. When malware hits a computer, it begins to run slower, taking up an extra 38 watts of energy. When the worm “Storm” was unleashed it hit 1.6 million machines around the world. All that extra energy, used by all those computers, was actually enough power to keep a 3-bedroom house running for 8 years. So, keep that anti-virus up to date and do a little good for the environment, while saving yourself a bunch of headaches.
