If I decided to be “up to no good,” I’d have plenty of opportunities to practice my craft. Almost daily I see messages on discussion lists, forums and blogs that announce “I’m going on vacation and won’t return until next Wednesday” or “I’m away from the office and will return in a week.”
It’s easy to get comfortable announcing your status in the virtual world. And it’s easy to forget that you’re not just talking to a few good friends around the watercooler.
Sadly, there are bad people on line just like there are in real life. When you announce your absence to the online world, there are potentially millions of people who could read about it. Plus no matter how hard you’ve tried to be cautious about protecting your identity and your business, anyone can find out pretty much anything.
It’s important to make sure that your clients and customers know when you will have an extended absence, but don’t announce it to the world. That’s just asking for trouble.
What do you think? Is this much ado about nothing or an important issue? Leave me a comment.
