In searching for small business experts to share ideas and insights for this special report, I could think of none more qualified and experienced than Anita Campbell, founder and CEO of Small Business Trends. She is a frequent author and speaker about the trends and market changes that impact small business owners. She runs one of the most successful small business communities and resources on the web.
I asked Anita just three questions:
1. What are the positive impacts for small biz owners that you’ve seen/experienced from the Obama administration?
“Some of the healthcare provisions have the potential to be very positive — including the restrictions that will prevent insurance companies from denying coverage for pre-existing conditions and the provisions making health insurance more available. I am hopeful it will mean more choice. However, it remains to be seen whether the cost will be worth it. The bill is too new and its impact will be too far reaching to predict with certainty the costs of premiums and the cost of taxes. I consider the cost issue far from settled. I’m keeping my fingers crossed…”
2. What are you hoping for in 2010, year 2 of the Obama Administration?
“Less political divisiveness — our President needs to see himself as president of ALL the U.S. people, not just President of the Democrats. I feel it is unfortunate that whatever good will come from healthcare comes at such high cost — not just potentially the dollar costs I alluded to above, but the cost on our society of dividing it into two parts. He was supposed to have been the great uniter — unfortunately, he’s become the Great Divider in the eyes of many.”
3. If you could pull together 5-6 people AND President Obama, who would they be and what would you ask to talk about and solve?
“I’d ask the President to meet with real small business owners — and not just partisans from his own party. And to stop campaigning and stop selling — and for him to just listen for a while to the daily challenges small businesses face. We don’t need “help” as if we’re incompetent as business owners and are just looking for handouts. We need government to stay out of small business’s way. That is what I would wish for President Obama.”
