There are some hopeful predictions in the 2009 Industry Outlook for Retail from Deloitte LLP. Not many but, hey, it’s better than none.
“If gas prices remain relatively low and a second tax stimulus package passes,” Deloitte writes, “the combination could release pent-up consumer demand.” Further, according to the Industry Outlook, discount/value department stores, warehouse clubs, dollar stores, outlet stores and off-price retailers are expected to perform well this year, as consumers focus on value.
“In response to this trend,” Deloitte notes, “all retailers should continue to demonstrate the value they bring to their customers, concentrating on price where possible, expanding private label offerings and enhancing loyalty program awards.”
Not bad advice. Further, Deloitte pinpoints several industry trends and advises retailers to pay attention. We will examine those trends over the next couple of days.
