I’ve written many times about the merits of being flexible and open minded while traveling. Robert Burns is credited with the phrase, “The best laid plans of mice and men often go astray,” and I think he must have written or said that after spending a week in another country. Recently while in
We boarded the bus and waited for the 15 minute ride back to the hotel where the bed and the tub were anxiously awaiting our arrival. With my ever-present GPS in hand, I noticed that the return route had suspiciously gone awry. It looked to me like the driver had blown through a stop or two and to confirm my suspicions, the locals on the bus suddenly got quite vocal. They were yelling, “Alto, Alto!” louder and louder as stop after stop went by.
I was thinking at the time that if I were the bus driver, there would be several ways I could handle this conundrum… I could double-back and drive over the last half of the route (making the stops this time). I could stop the bus and apologize while making everyone who needed to, get off at that particular stop. What did he actually do? You’ll never believe it.
Across a major bi-directional 4-lane highway, this daredevil bus driver attempted a 3-point U-turn while driving an extra-long metro city bus! If that weren’t bad enough, he chose an entry portal to begin his turn that was too steep for him to climb. The nose of the bus ground to a halt against the concrete pavement, and the driver blew out the transmission while trying to urge the bus forward out of the oncoming traffic. He couldn’t have planned a bigger catastrophe, the bus was stuck without any power, exactly 90 degrees across all lanes of traffic.
All he could do was open the doors. Fortunately with GPS in hand, I knew we were only a half mile away from the hotel so we walked the last bit and had a good soak in the tub. Enjoy the video.
