We surveyed you, the readers of AllBusiness.com, in the first week of January 2006 to find out what major desktop PC brands you have used in your businesses, and how you have liked them. Here are the results from 136 responses.
Who Uses What?
First we asked which brands AllBusiness.com readers use in business, and the results show Dell’s dominance in the market: Nearly half the readers use or have used Dell systems in their businesses. No other brand sits on as many desktops of small- to medium-sized businesses — HP is at 35 percent, Compaq and Gateway at 25 percent, IBM 15 percent, Apple 13 percent, and Sony 10 percent.
We also offered readers an opportunity to list other brands; 26 (24%) did so–five of them used custom-built systems, eMachines got five votes, BenQ and NEC got two each, and Toshiba, Micron, Acer, MPC, Packard Bell, and three regional brands got a single vote each.
AllBusiness.com Readers Rate Quality
Dell, Compaq, HP, and Sony tie for second place with a score 4.0 (on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being best). But IBM edges them out with a 4.1 for first place. Interestingly, Gateway, which rated second-lowest at 3.7, is the only brand-name maker not to get a worst-case vote of 1 in any category.
AllBusiness.com Readers Rate Price/Value
Dell tops this one, rating a 3.9 in value received for price paid, edging out Compaq and “Other” at 3.8. Apple ranks at the bottom with 2.7, and Sony isn’t celebrating with a 3.3.
AllBusiness.com Readers Rate Support
IBM is tops in this category, with a 3.7, closely followed by HP at 3.6. Dell, which has been beaten up in public lately for alleged support problems, manages a respectable third-place finish with 3.5. Gateway is at the bottom of the heap with 2.9, while Apple manages only a 3.2.
Would AllBusiness.com Readers Buy It Again?
In our minds, this is the most important question: You know the product, you’ve used it in real life — would you buy it again, knowing what you know now?
Which seems to justify our earlier Rule of Thumb that, push come to shove, you can throw a dart and get a decent system at a decent price, a system that won’t make you weep for your lost innocence, and will let you get on with your job. Which, when you think about it, is the best news of all….
