It is not too Fall-like from the thermometer outside here in the Northwest, but I did just flip over my calendar onto one of my favorite months… September. This is the month… people have put things off all summer and now that they have their kids off to school, or family vacations over, can get back “to business”. This is the time people buy, and make plans to buy through the end of the year and into next year.
I like September because no more excuses about how “everyone is gone” or “no one seems to be working” – it is back to the grindstone and here are three ideas for you to make this September your best one yet:
1. Be organized. Do whatever it takes – take a 1/2 day so that your files (on computer and off) are in order and you can find anything instantly. (ok, I’m working on THIS one…)
2. Be open. You never know where your next referral may come from. Know your value proposition and let people know what it is you do so that they can help you.
3. Be smiling. If your business is dragging you down – it shows. Reassess why it is you are doing what you are doing. Find ways to get excited (more on this later) and know that people opt to be your customer… they don’t HAVE to be your customer.
For a great book to help you organize your time, check out any of David Allen’s books. After being a Franklin-Covey facilitator for several years, I found that David has the best grasp of what people need to do to get things done than anyone I’ve read. It’s critical in selling that you focus on more important issues and have less focus on time wasters and things that are not helping you to create either relationships or revenues (and the relationship creating needs to lead to revenues)
What are three time-wasters you can eliminate, or three aspects of your business you can streamline? Please post your thoughts as it can help you most when you write something down – and it can help others too. What’s to improve?
