Kimmy Cavallo is a self-proclaimed business idea junkie who has always come up with creative ideas for businesses. Even when she worked as a teacher Kimmy says, “I wanted to do something creative and different, and wanted to have my own business.”
Like many working mothers, Kimmy worked full time as a teacher many years before becoming a mom. Once a mom, she decided to remain at home while the children were young. While she’s enjoyed this time at home (Kimmy has two children, one in preschool, one in kindergarten) her love of business and creativity has gotten the best of her. In effect, Kimmy was bitten by the business bug!
She began making fragrances from oils fifteen years ago, developing unique scents for herself and her friends; but it wasn’t until she found herself stuck in bed with walking pneumonia watching a Twilight convention on television that the idea of “Kimmy Makes Scents” bloomed.
A vampire book and movie fanatic, Kimmy could not get enough of the movie, and as she observed the vendors the show featured from the Twilight convention she realized not one vendor was selling scents. This gave her an idea: Create a line of fragrant oil perfumes that went along with characters in the movie. Due to copyright issues, Kimmy can’t call her perfumes by the character’s names; however, she can use characteristics of the characters in the descriptions, which is how she came up with such scents as Hybrid and Pixie (you’ll have to check out her website to see who these are named after and why!)
She then called her friend Heather Ramirez who had extensive experience in sales and marketing. She shared her idea with Heather and Kimmy Makes Scents was born. Heather handled the business aspect of a new business ownership, such as obtaining the LLC, while Kimmy began studying information about fragrant oils and seeking companies that offered the oils wholesale. Kimmy says the partnership has worked phenomenally because it blends their individual talents.
Heather and Kimmy took their fragrances to a kiosk last month when Twilight’s New Moon opened. Their next stop: The official Twilight convention in San Francisco.
We’ll be following Heather and Kimmy along on this journey as they bottle (yes, they do it all by hand!) and sell their fragrances. Check back next month to see how their first major sales convention went!
