I have had my Verizon Blackberry Pearl 8130 since February and to tell you the truth, the thing is a piece of crap. I have not had a device that was this useless (except maybe for the Nokia N-Gage) during my whole career. It crashes on an almost daily basis. It stops sending and receiving e-mail. I take it to a meeting and use the voice recorder so I have a record of the meeting, and the damn thing crashes before it even saves the recording. Shooting video with it results in the same thing. Last month, I was on a business trip and the phone application crashed. It’s bad enough to not be able to receive email, but to not actually have a phone is where I draw the line.
After calling Verizon tech support on an almost weekly basis I have finally given up. They can’t help me. Last time the guy actually said, “Oh, you receive about 100 emails a day. You can’t use this device. You need a business class device. This is a consumer device.” So I said, “If it is a consumer device, then why cant I take a photo or a video without it crashing?” He confided in me that his entire job has become supporting the 8130, that Verizon shouldn’t be selling them, and that it is an inferior Blackberry solution.
Speaking of solutions, I found one that actually works with this piece of crap. Every morning, I remove the battery (which clears the memory) and then download new service books. I never shoot video or record voice with it. I will only shoot a photo if absolutely necessary. If I do, then I immediately remove the battery and reboot the device. That seems to keep it in good working order and it takes much less time that calling Verizon every other day for support.
So there you have it, the Blackberry tip that could one day save your life.
