Why do we spend millions on education and still see scores continue to tumble—and this in spite of all the promises not to leave any student behind? It’s a question with a global perspective, as Frank Milner, President of Tutor Doctor, discusses on The Franchise Show.
His global perspective, from his current residence in
And here’s the interesting part—it’s not just for students having trouble keeping up, but for the A student who needs to push it to the next level of excellence, or has met his Waterloo with just one too many clicks up the college prep mathematics curriculum.
So what broader considerations are represented by Tutor Doctor in selecting a franchise business opportunity? Here are three:
- Franchise concepts that meet family needs have traction. Education is the topic here with Frank, but healthcare also comes to mind. People can do without the vente -triple-espresso-latte-light-foam-extra-hot-over-easy (I can’t—), and maybe the third burrito at lunch (no comment), but we’ll sacrifice whatever we have to in order to make sure Johnny can read—and get into the right college
- Put demographics on your side. Not only is current school enrollment on the rise, but there’s a baby boom going on, and millions of kids will be nearing school age in a few years. Education has a future, just like healthcare on the other side of the age spectrum. Shopping center developers know to put their grocery stores in the path of suburban growth–make sure your business will also be in the path of demographic growth.
- Service business’s have the edge in today’s economy. There are great bricks and mortar concepts out there, but service business’s have low entry costs—no furniture, fixtures, or equipment to invest in—and no rent. And instead of being dependant on a great location, personal marketing skills are the key to success in the service sector. There may be lots of tutors, painters, handymen, and bookkeepers in your neighborhood, but you can be the best if you have the ability to build your business at the grassroots level.
There are options here—the traditional learning center of course—but Tutor Doctor brings the product right to your door. Sure, you can be Jeff’s Tutoring Service, but having national, and international, branding and organization behind you may make all the difference. After all, that’s what franchising is all about. In picking the right concept, get it right, right from the beginning.
