I had the pleasure of meeting Mark Victor Hansen on my trip to Australia. I quickly discovered that he’s as kind and generous as he is accomplished. Hansen is an entrepreneur, motivational speaker, and prolific author. Perhaps you’ve heard of or read one of the many volumes in the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” series? He’s also the author of the New York Times Bestseller “The One Minute Millionaire”. I enjoyed our time together and am excited to share his thoughts with you here! His latest work is about the richest kids in America – what can we learn from the newest millionaires?
“We’ve never been in the economic downturn we are today. And as I’ve said before, innovation is going to save us. I developed the concept for the book after one of my young mentees at UCLA started generating huge amounts of wealth with a creative idea. I wondered, are there other kids who are doing the same? There are. And it’s astounding! I was dumbfounded some of these kids are making so much money. It’s fantastic. The book details how they did it and how you can too,” explained Hansen.
Clearly, Hansen aims to inspire. Did I know how to write a business plan at age 17? Definitely not. Far from it, in fact. But it’s a testament to the fact that a lack of experience and knowledge isn’t necessarily a deterring factor to creating a successful business.
“All of the youth in the book took a problem and turned it into cash. They decided in favor of themselves. And it’s paid! Each of the boys and girls I met were incredibly self-assured and confident.”
What lessons impacted Hansen when he was young?
“My father tried to teach me the 10-10-10 rule. Donate 10 percent of your income, save 10 percent of your income, and invest 10 percent of your income. I didn’t have the depth of understanding I do now to realize how important and valid that lesson is. If everyone saved 10 percent of what they made, we wouldn’t be in the situation we are now! People have been living beyond their means rather than beneath. Youth today are 100% of our future; if they learn to generate wealth, we can get the whole economy going,” Hansen believes.
I’m amused and appreciative of a number of Hansen’s famous quotes. He argues that one of God’s greatest gifts is creating problems for us – problems we have more than enough brain cells to solve and prosper from.
“We’re born over-endowed. We’re given all this potential to solve the big challenges, like the one we’re in now! A few of us need to get it together so everyone can get it right.”
And I believe he’s one of them.
