There are many components to a successful eBay listing. One of the most important of those is the Listing Title. The words in the title are what eBay’s internal search engine uses to index your listing and therefore chooses when to display it. Here are some tips for putting together a good eBay title.
Place Important Keywords – Obviously if eBay indexes the titles, you want to make certain your most important keyword and keyword phrases are placed in the title. Important keywords might include such things as brand name, model number, or model name.
Use Other Words Wisely – An eBay title is limited to 55 characters including spaces. Often there may not be much space to work with once you have your important keywords in the title. So try to keep your other words short. For example, if you’re selling a series of books, you can save space by typing it as “Books 1 thru 20” or even “Books 1-20”. Also, instead of using up space to say “New in Box” you can use NIB (the somewhat widely recognized abbreviation for New in Box) or just the word NEW.
Upper Case in Title – In Netiquette 101 we’re usually told that using all upper case is rude and that we should avoid it. But it actually works pretty well in eBay titles because it helps to make your title stand out among other similar titles. Do not carry the all upper case over to the rest of your eBay however.
White Space – In the event you have leftover space, use it to put some space between your important keywords where it makes sense to do so. In other words, use all 55 characters left to right. This can have the effect of placing emphasis on the keywords and also making the title easier to read.
No Silly Words – Avoid goofy words like L@@K and WOW. Not only do these kinds of words waste valuable space in your title, but they will make you look, well … silly and unprofessional.
