If you use an email list for your home based business, you know that the success (or failure) of the email campaign is largely based on the email “open rate”. That is, the percentage of people who actually open the emails that you send to your list. One huge thing to pay close attention to is the subject line.
Now you must have an interesting email for them to read, but the first step is the subject line. Unless the subject line is interesting, they probably won’t get much further. So use the subject line to attract their interest. There are many approaches to this, but I’ll mention 3 here.
Ask a Question – Pose a question in your subject line. That’s a good one because it leaves something unfinished. The reader must open your email to find out what the ‘answer’ is.
Use a Metaphor – Along the same lines, use an attention getting metaphor. For example, say you were telling a story comparing certain types of people to certain kinds of birds. Include the metaphor in your subject line like: Are you a Sparrow, a Hawk, or an Eagle? It will leave something unfinished and hopefully get them to open the email.
Something Light – Try something funny, light-hearted, or even a bit absurd. This works best with a well established list; a list that already knows you. So it might be best used later in an email series.
Don’t trick your readers though! Don’t use a question that has nothing to do with your email. It might work once, but people won’t appreciate it. What about you? Do you have email subject line tips to add? Post your comments here.
