It is the start of a long weekend here in the U.S. celebrating Memorial Day – a day of recognizing those who have died in service to this country. My experience as either a warp-speed corporate employee or as a small business owner has been to be mindful of the reason for the holiday, recognize it in some way, and then do one of two things all weekend.
When you are working at “warp speed” building your business, you can use a long weekend either as a time for recreation and getaway, or for focus and organization. People who can do both in one weekend (and do each well) have the best of both worlds.
[My dad is a WWII veteran, so my weekend will include visiting with him. We are losing these vets at a high pace now that they are in their 80’s, so make sure your local veterans are thanked and known. Every month I take my dad down to our local Coast Guard museum where he talks with other Navy and Coast Guard guys about the past]
Business owners – either get fully AWAY from your business for a few days if you can – go and recreate (notice the word create in the word recreate?) Here in Bellingham, WA we have a famous event called Ski to Sea – an 85 mile relay race with seven different sports involved – it pretty much consumes the community. You probably have some great events happening where you live.
Some years I fully get away, and this year I will work on my focus, priorities, and organization over this weekend. Once client work is done, it is off to a focus on efficiencies that will fine tune my process and enable me to get more done with less effort.
Either way, whether you work on the business or get totally away from it – these are critical to the success of your business. If you can’t get away, consider hiring a virtual assistant, or farming out some of your work through Guru – a GREAT site to get projects bid on and done.
How will you streamline your business for the beginning of the second half of 2008?
