If you are planning a home based business or already have one, you should have a business plan. You should also have some core guidelines in your business. No two home businesses are alike, but here are three things that I believe should be part of the core guidelines.
Identify your core business and stick with it. It’s too easy to get distracted and go off in all kinds of different directions. Sometimes it’s appropriate to go off in a different direction in order to grow your business, but only if conditions warrant it. Otherwise, plan to stick with your core competencies.
Find mentors and apply what they teach. A mentor can be anyone in your field who is an expert. Pay attention to what the experts in your field have to say. This is not only important in the beginning but even after you yourself become an ‘expert’ and they become your peers. Even then, you will never know it all and will always need to network with other like minded business owners to keep current.
Stay in touch with your clients. Stay in touch with your customers and/or clients. They don’t even have to be your customers or clients. Read what kind of reviews they are “yelping” or “tweeting” about the services of your competition. Listen to what they have to say and find ways to improve your customer relations and overall business.
Following core guidelines and principles will help you stay on track in your home business. This blog post does not mean to imply that these are the only 3 guidelines that matter. Your own business may have many other different ones.
