Bay Area counties quarantined for moth protection.

Portions of five counties in the San Francisco Bay Area were quarantined by the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) to stop the spread of the Light Brown Apple Moth, an Australian native pest that eats grapes and spreads botrytis. Grapes are among the host crops that must now be

certified by an agricultural official as being free from the pest before being shipped either within or without the quarantine area, which encompasses 182 square miles of Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco, Marin and Santa Clara counties. An expansion of the quarantine area to include Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Mateo counties is anticipated, since the moth has also been detected there.
