Australian Parties Debate Territory Nuclear Waste Dump.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) recently reported that the federal government is examining the possibility of storing the nation's nuclear waste at a site in Solomon in the Northern Territory.

According to ABC, Labor party candidate for the Solomon district Jim Davidson

has accused his Country Liberal Party (CLP) running mate of supporting plans for the nuclear dump site, while claiming that he will oppose a nuclear waste storage facility in Solomon.

"Territorians have for too long been treated like poor cousins by this federal government," said Davidson. "There is no way that I'm going to sit by and allow the federal government [to] impose its will on Territorians by creating a nuclear waste dump in the Territory."

ABC said CLP's Dave Tollner noted that if the Northern Territory was deemed the safest place for the nation's nuclear waste, residents "would have a responsibility as Australians to take that waste on."
