Google Authorship: Another Way to Put Google+ to Work for Your Business

If your business website uses authored content, Google now offers another great feature that can boost your search-result rankings. Here's how to start using it.

Last June, Google announced a new feature that allows websites to link collections of authored content to a single author page in Google search results. Here's how Google described its Authorship Markup feature:

“We now support markup that enables websites to publicly link within their site from content to author pages. For example, if an author at The New York Times has written dozens of articles, using this markup, the webmaster can connect these articles with a New York Times author page. An author page describes and identifies the author, and can include things like the author’s bio, photo, articles, and other links.”

This is a great way for local business owners to get even more recognition on the web, so it’s smart business to get Google authorship set up as soon as possible by utilizing the following steps. For more information, you may also refer to Google’s help section.

  1. First, sign in to your Google+ profile from https://plus.google.com/.
  2. Near the upper-right hand corner of the screen, click your name, and press the “Profile” link in the dropdown menu that appears.
  3. View the page URL. Between two of the forward slashes should be a large string of digits—this is your Google+ Profile ID.

  4. On the webpages of the articles that you have authored, you must include a particular link to your Google Profile. This can be done most easily by adding to your signature (i.e. for a blog) HTML code in the following format:

    <a href=https://plus.google.com/108710332136966440321 <a/>.

    To modify the code appropriately, replace the Google+ Profile ID in the code’s URL with that of your own, and change “Chris’ Google+ profile” to fit the text that you’d like to see displayed on the link. **(If the website on which you post articles uses the Wordpress CMS, and you have administrator rights, refer to the Tip below Step 5 for an easy method to implement the code.)
  5. The last thing that must be done is to reference the sites on which your articles exist from your Google+ profile. 
    • Return to your Google+ profile, and click the “About” tab of your page.
    • Near the top of the page, press the “Edit Profile” button.

    • Click the region of your profile labeled “Links”.
    • In the menu that appears, click “Add custom link.” Paste the URL of the homepage of the website on which your article posts exist, and add a fitting label.

    • Go to the “+1’s” tab, and checkmark the box next to “Show this tab on your profile.”

    • Press the “Save” button, then the “Done editing” button at the top of your profile.

**Tip: If the website on which you post articles uses the Wordpress CMS, and you have administrator rights, consider using the easy method below for implementing the code:

    1. Login to your Wordpress Administrator account so that you are at the Dashboard.
    2. On the left panel, scroll down and press the “Users” link.
    3. Find and click the link to the profile options for the user that you would like to set up Google authorship.
    4. Scroll to the “Biographical Info” section and paste the Google code inside the field.
    5. Press the “Update User” button. A link to your Google+ profile will occur everywhere that biographical information is displayed—chiefly in the user’s signature after an article post.

That's it! You have now completed setup for Google Authorship recognition. Soon you can expect to see your Google+ profile photo and name alongside links to your articles on Google search results! Additionally, any articles posted to the websites you’ve linked will appear under the +1’s tab of your profile.
