Multnomah County in Oregon re-schedules float of Sauvie bridge span

Stormy weather and technical delays earlier this month shelved Multnomah County's plan to float a new Sauvie Island Bridge span down the Willamette River. But the county now plans to float the span down the river Wednesday barring further troubles.

The 1,600-ton, 365-foot steel arch has

sat on a barge at the Port of Portland since the first week of December. If unforeseen problems arise Wednesday and again halt the float, the county says it won't try again until after Christmas at the earliest.

Contractor Max J. Kuney Co. told the county last week it would have to close the Multnomah Channel for three days to install the span, longer than the contractor originally expected.
