Navy Pier's next act: a theater for children.(News)

The Chicago Shakespeare Theater plans to build a children's theater at Navy Pier, according to Executive Director Criss Henderson.

Plans for the new venue, tentatively dubbed Playhouse on Navy Pier, would have about 900 seats. Modeled after children's theaters in New York, Minneapolis, Seattle and Tempe, Ariz., the Playhouse would stage three to four of its own productions a year. It would also host out-of-town children's productions, such as last year's Tony Award-nominated musical "Frog and Toad,'' which, unable to land in a downtown
